Pin Retention : Stake

Staked every other knuckle
Staked every other knuckle

Staking a hinge pin is a common method of retaining the hinge pin. Some continuous hinges have pins staked in place at regular intervals while others have no staking. The frequency of staking directly affects the security of the pin. This is variable from a hinge with a single stake to keep the pin from moving while installed to a very secure stake on every other knuckle.

The staking process forcibly deforms the material of the hinge and dimples into the barrel to capture the pin. It is done with a sharp punch that is driven into the backside of the hinge.
