Maximum Springs

The number of torsion springs that can be placed into a hinge is limited by the number of knuckles that need to be removed in order to place them. Each time a knuckle is removed, the overall hinge strength is weakened a bit, as there is one less knuckle holding the hinge leaves together.

For multiple torsion springs, it is important to space them evenly on the hinge and leave at least one knuckle between them from each leaf to keep the hinge construction strong.

This hinge has every third knuckle removed and replaced by a spring. This is probably the maximum safe density of springs, and is extremely rare. Note how each leaf gets an even distribution of knuckles wrapping around the pin.
