Hardware Around Town - Correct Orientation of a Gas Spring

Guden gas springs

For applications where one gas spring end is higher than the other for the majority of it's at rest position, it is recommended to have the tube end higher than the rod. I noticed right away on this food truck awning that their gas springs were mounted incorrectly. In this application the rod is in the up position. This allows the lubrication oil in the tube all flow to the bottom, and not surround the protective seal for where the rod enters the tube. If the seal dries out, more gas pressure can possibly escape shortening the lifespan of your gas spring. It also doesn't allow the rod to move through the oil which can help with adding a dampening effect for when the unit is compressing. If at all possible, mount your gas spring with the tube higher than the rod for a longer life and better workability.
